Community Guidelines

Every show and every episode in TV Binge Diary has a discussion under it. It is a small place for talking about television, and these are the rules that keep it one. They are part of the Terms of Service, so breaking them has consequences — but the point of writing them out is so that nobody has to guess.

What belongs here

Reactions, theories, arguments about a finale, the thing you noticed on a second watch, whether the book was better. Disagreement is the point; two people can hate each other's taste and still be welcome.

What does not

There is no tolerance for the first group below. Post it and the comment goes and the account can go with it, immediately and without warning.

• Attacks on people. Harassment, bullying, threats, incitement to violence, or hatred directed at anyone over race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, caste, disability, disease, age, sex, gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Argue with what somebody said; do not go after who they are.
• Anything sexual involving a minor, in any form, real or fictional. This is reported to the authorities as well as removed.
• Sexually explicit or obscene material. Discussing that a show has a sex scene is fine. Writing pornography is not.
• Somebody's private information — an address, a phone number, a workplace, a real name they have not published themselves.
• Impersonation. Passing yourself off as another member, a public figure, or as us.
• Illegal material, and links to pirated streams or downloads of the shows being discussed.

The second group is not abuse, but it degrades the place, and comments in it are removed too:

• Unmarked spoilers. This is the one rule specific to a TV app, and it matters most here. An episode discussion is fair game for that episode and everything before it; a show discussion is not the place to say how the last season ends. If you are about to spoil something later than the page you are on, do not.
• Spam and advertising. Promotion, affiliate links, referral codes, or the same comment pasted across a dozen threads.
• Deliberate derailing. Politics, feuds, and copy-pasted arguments that have nothing to do with the show on the page.

The two controls you have

Report

Every comment has one, with four reasons: unmarked spoiler, abusive or hateful, spam or advertising, or something else. Nothing is hidden the moment you tap it — an automatic hide at some number of reports is a tool for groups who want somebody silenced, and there is no version of it that a determined group cannot use. A person reads every report instead — one person, so some days that is hours and some days it is longer, but nothing sits unread. Anything involving a child or a credible threat jumps the queue; see below.

Block

Every comment has that too, and it does not wait for us. Blocking somebody removes their comments from every discussion you read, immediately, and stops them replying to you. They are not told, and it does not count as a report — if somebody is breaking these rules, block them and report them, because the block only fixes your own screen. Everyone you have blocked is listed on the Profile screen, and unblocking is one tap.

What we do

We remove comments that break these rules. For a first lapse that looks like carelessness — an unmarked spoiler, a heated reply — that is usually all that happens, and we say why. A pattern, or anything in the first list above, costs the account: suspended, or closed. Accounts made to get around a closure are closed as they appear.

A removed comment leaves a marker rather than a hole, so that the replies underneath still read as answers to something. Its text is deleted, not hidden.

If you think we got it wrong

Write to g.luga@codevider.com with your handle and roughly when it happened, and a person will look again. If we removed something we should not have, we say so and put it back where we can.

Reporting something urgent

If you see material involving a child, a credible threat to somebody, or anything else that cannot wait for a queue, email g.luga@codevider.com with the word URGENT in the subject as well as filing the report. If someone is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services first.
